CSU's Past Provost, Loren Crabtree, drew the following continuum.
DATA------------INFORMATION------------KNOWLEDGE------------WISDOM
Dr. Crabtree pointed out that the World Wide Web has a great
deal of data, a fair amount of information, some knowledge,
and very little wisdom (personal communication, September
29, 1998). Provost Crabtree went on to say, "Colorado State
University is a Carnegie Research I institution. We are
among a premier group of institutions that provide high-quality,
research-based information. Colorado State is proud to be
high on the list."
What is a Carnegie Research I institution? According to
The Chronicle of Higher Education (1998, August 28,
p. 42, "Research Universities 1 offer a full range of baccalaureate
programs, are committed to graduate education through the
doctorate, and give high priority to research. They award
50 or more doctoral degrees each year. In addition, they
receive annually $40-million or more in federal support."
Source: Doctorate-Granting Institutions. (1998, August 28).
The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac, XLV(1),
p. 42. Only 89 of 240 Doctorate-Granting Institutions are
Carnegie Research I institutions. Colorado State University
is one of the 89 top institutions which means CSU is in
the top 37% of Doctorate-Granting Institutions.

10) How would you recommend a Youth Violence Prevention
Program to your local principal/guidance counselor/teacher
for his/her use with a targeted audience? Let's say in your
community the school calls you and asks you to recommend
a program that they can purchase to address the problem
of youth violence. How would you help the school choose?
What questions would you ask? What characteristics would
you look for? How would you distinguish a quality one from
a non-quality one? What criteria would you use? Ads that
come across your desk? Catalogs? Peer recommendations? How
confident are you that the violence prevention program you
choose will work with the targeted group(s) of youth? Who
is the targeted audience? What kind of a violence problem
do you want to address? How big is the problem? How many
youth are involved? What ethnicity, social economic conditions
exist?
